2017 - Team Ratings After Round 20

Adelaide and Sydney put some space between themselves and the other 16 teams over the weekend after convincing wins over other top 6 ranked teams. They are now ranked 1st and 2nd, in that order, on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS.

Adelaide, in particular, were in devastating form in their game against Port Adelaide, relegating the Power to 10th spot now on both Systems.

On MoSSBODS, 13 teams moved rankings, including GWS up four places into 3rd, Essendon up three places into 6th, Collingwood up two places into 8th, West Coast up two places into 11th, and the already-mentioned Port Adelaide down seven places into 10th.

MoSHBODS re-rated 11 teams, elevating GWS, RIchmond, the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood two places each, slipping Geelong back two places into 6th, and also moving Port Adelaide back seven places into 10th.

All that shuffling has served to more closely align the rankings of all 18 teams, with none now ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems.

On Offensive Ratings, only two teams moved multiple places on both Systems, Richmond climbing two spots on both, and Port Adelaide slipping four places on MoSSBODS and three places on MoSHBODS.

Defensively, the only teams moving multiple spots on both Systems were:

  • Adelaide, up 2 spots on both Systems
  • GWS, up 6 spots on MoSSBODS and 3 spots on MoSHBODS
  • Collingwood, up 3 spots on MoSSBODS and 2 spots on MoSHBODS
  • Port Adelaide, down 3 spots on both

In terms of Ratings compression:

  • For MoSSBODS on Offence the gap between 3rd and 11th is only 2.4 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Offence the gap between 3rd and 9th is only 6.7 points
  • For MoSSBODS on Defence the gap between 3rd and 13th is only 2.4 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Defence the gap between 5th and 11th is only 4.5 points

On offence, MoSSBODS still has the ordering as Adelaide, Essendon and then Sydney, while MoSHBODS still has Adelaide, Essendon and then GWS.

Defensively, both Systems have the ordering as Sydney, Richmond and then Adelaide.

The latest round-by-round MoSSBODS Rating journey animation shows, among other things, Adelaide's and Sydney's rating rise in Round 20, and Port Adelaide's decline.

Next, a look at the current MoSSBODS Ratings compared with those for every other team in history that also had a Round 20 in its home-and-away season.

We see that Adelaide is once again mingling with some of the most highly-rated teams from previous seasons and that Essendon is emerging as an offensive threat.

ChiPS AND MARS

ChiPS re-ranked 12 teams this week and MARS re-ranked 11, though only Collingwood moved by more than one spot on both Systems, rising four places to 7th on ChiPS, and two places to 10th on MARS.

Amongst the Top 3, ChiPS swapped Sydney for Port Adelaide in 2nd, while MARS made no changes. ChiPS now has the ordering as Adelaide, Sydney, Port Adelaide and MARS has Adelaide, Sydney, Geelong.

Across the four Systems, the only teams appearing in the Top 5 for all of them are now Adelaide, GWS, and Sydney, with GWS joining and Port Adelaide leaving that list.

Sydney also finds itself still ranked many places higher by all four Systems compared to their competition ladder ranking of 6th.

The largest disparities in the rankings across the four Systems are now for:

  • Port Adelaide (ranked 3rd on MARS and 10th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS)
  • the Western Bulldogs (ranked 5th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS, and 11th on ChiPS)
  • Essendon (ranked 6th on MoSSBODS and 13th on MARS)
  • West Coast (ranked 6th on MARS and 12th on MoSHBODS)

No other team is ranked more than four places differently across the Systems.
