2014 - Team Ratings After Round 24
/ChiPS this week felt that the Hawks, Swans and Power did better than could be expected in their respective wins, and that the Dons were also overachievers despite going down to the Roos. Consequently, it lifted the Ratings of these four teams and dropped those of their opponents by equal amounts. MARS, however, as it usually does, rewarded all four winners with Ratings increases.
ChiPS makes smaller adjustments to team Ratings on the basis of Finals results, so the consequence of its Ratings changes this week in terms of team Rankings was nought, while for MARS it meant swapping Port Adelaide and Geelong in 4th and 5th.
ChiPS and MARS now agree about the teams that be Ranked 1st, 2nd, 6th and in all of the positions from 10th to 16th. They differ only by a single place in the Rankings of the pairs Port Adelaide and Fremantle (who occupy 3rd and 4th), Richmond and West Coast (who occupy 8th and 9th), and Melbourne and St Kilda (who occupy 17th and 18th). ChiPS prefers the first-named team for the higher Ranking in each case.
Their only substantive disagreement relates to the Rankings of Adelaide and Geelong, ChiPS assigning Rankings of 5th and 7th respectively, MARS of 7th and 5th.
That's quite a change relative to the start of the season where you can see that the two Systems differed by three places in the Ranking of three teams (Sydney, Fremantle and West Coast) and differed by two places in the Ranking of three other teams (the Kangaroos, Richmond and Collingwood). Convergent validity perhaps.
