/The latest Rankings on Dashboard Metrics graphic appears below, and reveals that team rankings on the following metrics are most highly correlated with ladder position:
Own Points per Game (+0.89)
Own Scoring Shots per Game (+0.88)
MoS Win Production Function Expected Wins (+0.87)
Percent of Quarters Won (+0.86)
Own Goals per Game (+0.83)
Q1 Performances (+0.74)
Q3 Performances (+0.74)
Least highly correlated are:
Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.24)
Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.33)
Q4 Performances (+0.42)
Q2 Performances (+0.43)
Opponent Goals per Game (+0.48)
It’s nice to see some sort of normalcy being returned to as the MoS Win Production Function once again becomes highly predictive of ladder position.
A review of this table and the detailed Team Dashboard below reveals:
Eight of the Top 9 teams on the MoS Win Production Function sit in the Top 9 spots on the competition ladder. Adelaide is the outlier.
Sydney are 1st on all but three metrics
Carlton, Brisbane Lions, and Western Bulldogs are Top 5 on all but six metrics
Fremantle and GWS are Top 5 on all but seven metrics
The larger Team Dashboard also reveals that:
Only two teams have a winning streak extending beyond two games: GWS and Brisbane Lions
Three are more teams with winning streaks of two games or more outside the Top 8 on the competion ladder than inside it
Only three teams have a losing streak extending beyond two games: Collingwood, West Coast and Richmond
North Melbourne have converted at 62% across all four quarters
Port Adelaide have converted at only 47% across all four quarters
Adelaide’s opponents have converted at only 49% across all four quarters, West Coast’s at 57%.
GWS have won only 44% of Q4s and have a 91 percentage for that quarter.
Richmond, North Melbourne, and West Coast have been outscored by their opponents in every quarter
The only teams to have outscored their opponents in every quarter are Fremantle and Western Bulldogs. Brisbane Lions, Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Sydney, and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have registered more scoring shots than their opponents in all four quarters. North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, and West Coast are the only teams to have registered fewer scoring shots than their opponents in all four quarters.
Port Adelaide have converted at only 41% in Q4s and Richmond at 36% (and 43% in Q2s). West Coast have converted at only 44% in Q3s.
Carlton have converted at 62% in Q4s, and North Melbourne at 61%, GWS at 61%, and Geelong at 60% in Q1s. North Melbourne have converted at 65% in Q2s.
Sydney’s opponents have converted at only 35% in Q2s whilst they themselves have converted at 62%.
West Coast’s opponents have converted at 65% in Q2s, and Carlton’s at 66% in Q2s.
