MatterOfStats 2024 : Team Dashboard for Round 15

The latest Rankings on Dashboard Metrics graphic appears below, and reveals that team rankings on the following metrics are most highly correlated with ladder position (which, thankfully, can now be created without adjustment):

  • Own Points per Game (+0.78)

  • Percent of Quarters Won (+0.7)

  • Own Scoring Shots per Game (+0.75)

  • Own Goals per Game (+0.72)

Least highly correlated are:

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.22)

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.26)

  • Opponent Points per Game (+0.37)

  • Q2 Performances (+0.38)

  • Opponent Goals per Game (+0.4)

  • Q4 Performances (+0.48)

  • Opponent Scoring Shots per Game (+0.49)

The only metrics for which the Top 8 teams on the competition ladder are in the Top for the metric are Q3 Performances, and Percent of Quarters Won.

A review of this table and the detailed Team Dashboard below reveals:

  • Carlton are 13th on Own Goals and Points production, and 13th on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion

  • Essendon still has only the 11th-highest percentage and are 9th on Own and 12th on Opponent Scoring Shots per Game

  • Port Adelaide are 17th on Own Scoring Shot Conversion and 11th on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion

  • Western Bulldogs are 3rd on Own Scoring Shot generation and 5th on Opponent Scoring Shot generation. They’re also 3rd on Goals and Points Generated per Game

  • Brisbane Lions are 2nd on Own Scoring Shot and 3rd on Opponent Scoring Shot generation

The larger Team Dashboard also reveals that:

  • Adelaide’s and Sydney’s opponents have converted at only 47%

  • Geelong has won only 36% of Q2s

  • Essendon have generated fewer scoring shots than their opponents have in Q1s and Q2s, and have a sub-100 percentage for Q2s.

  • Hawthorn have outscored their opponents in Q2s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter

  • Richmond, North Melbourne, and West Coast have been outscored by their opponents in every quarter

  • The only teams to have outscored their opponents in every quarter are Sydney, Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs. They as well as Collingwood and Fremantle are the only teams to have registered more scoring shots than their opponents in all four quarters.

  • Brisbane Lions have scored 57% of their points in 1st halfs and conceded 56% in 2nd halfs. They’ve converted at only 43% in Q3s

  • Sydney’s opponents have converted at only 34% in Q2s whilst they themselves have converted at 63%

  • Geelong have converted at 66% in Q1s, and North Melbourne at 63% in Q2s

  • Adelaide’s opponents have converted at only 42% in Q4s, and St Kilda’s opponents at just 41%
