MatterOfStats 2024 : Team Dashboard for Round 13

The latest Rankings on Dashboard Metrics graphic appears below, and reveals that team rankings on the following metrics are most highly correlated with ladder position (which, once again is determined firstly by percentage of possible competition points accumulated, and then by percentage):

  • Q3 Performances (+0.81)

  • Own Scoring Shots per Game (+0.79)

  • Percent of Quarters Won (+0.79)

  • Own Points per Game (+0.77)

  • Own Goals per Game (+0.74)

Least highly correlated are:

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.06)

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.19)

  • Opponent Goals per Game (+0.29)

  • Opponent Points per Game (+0.32)

  • Opponent Scoring Shots per Game (+0.39)

  • Q2 Performances (+0.39)

  • Q1 Performances (+0.47)

  • Q4 Performances (+0.48)

The fact that only five metrics have correlations above +0.7 and eight have correlations below +0.5 is very revealing about just how different this season is, with teams ranked as low as 17th on some metrics sitting comfortably in the Top 8 on the ladder, and teams in the top 5 on some metrics sitting uncomfortably in the bottom half.

A review of this table and the detailed Team Dashboard below reveals:

  • Carlton are 14th on Opponent Goals and Points production

  • Essendon still has only the 12th-highest percentage and are 11th on Own and 10th on Opponent Scoring Shots per Game

  • Port Adelaide are 17th on Own Scoring Shot Conversion and 16th on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion

  • Western Bulldogs are 3rd on Own Scoring Shot generation and 7th on Opponent Scoring Shot generation

  • Brisbane Lions are 5th on Own Scoring Shot generation and 2nd on Opponent Scoring Shot generation

The larger Team Dashboard also reveals that:

  • Adelaide’s opponents have converted at only 47%, and Sydney’s at 45%

  • Geelong and Essendon have won only 38% of Q2s

  • Essendon have generated fewer scoring shots than their opponents have in Q1s and Q2s, and have a sub-100 percentage for Q2s.

  • Hawthorn have outscored their opponents in Q2s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter

  • Richmond, North Melbourne, and West Coast have been outscored by their opponents in every quarter

  • The only teams to have outscored their opponents in every quarter are Port Adelaide, Sydney and Western Bulldogs. They and Fremantle are the only teams to have registered more scoring shots than their opponents in all four quarters.

  • Brisbane Lions have scored 58% of their points in 1st halfs and conceded 56% in 2nd halfs. They’ve converted at only 38% in Q3s

  • Sydney’s opponents have converted at only 32% in Q2s

  • Geelong have converted at 67% in Q1s, and North Melbourne at 65% in Q2s
