2020 - Team Ratings After Round 22 (Final)
MoSHBODS’ relatively high and unfulfilled expectations of the Cats was enough to have it crown Richmond as the number 1 rated team at the end of the season, while MoSSBODS’ less lofty aspirations for the runners up saw it leave Geelong in top spot.
Looking across the season as a whole, Port Adelaide, St Kilda, Melbourne, Carlton and Gold Coast climbed furthest up the rankings on both Systems, while Collingwood, Hawthorn, Adelaide, and North Melbourne fell furthest.
The chart below provides a direct comparison of MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS Combined Ratings and shows that MoSHBODS Ratings, on average, finished at 3.41 times MoSSBODS Ratings.
On the Component Ratings, on offence we find MoSSBODS with a final Top 3 of Cats, Tigers, and Lions, and MoSHBODS with Cats, Lions, and Tigers. On defence MoSSBODS finishes Cats, Tigers, and Power, and MoSHBODS finishes Tigers, Cats, and Power.
Six teams finish the season rated above-average on offence, and 13 above-average on defence.
On MoSSBODS, 6 teams finish rated positively on offence and defence (no change), 5 rated negatively on both (no change), none rated positively on offence but negatively on defence (no change), and 7 rated negatively on offence but positively on defence (no change). The correlation between the teams’ MoSSBODS offensive and defensive Ratings ends up at +0.659, which is down very slightly compared to last week.
And, finally, to MARS, which flipped the Tigers, narrowly, into 1st and the Cats into 2nd this week.
The team-by-team changes in MARS Ratings from the start to the end of the season were:
Geelong +22.9
Port Adelaide +22.6
Richmond +20.8
St Kilda +18.5
Brisbane Lions +15.3
Melbourne +9.3
Western Bulldogs +8.9
West Coast +7.8
Gold Coast +2.3
Carlton -0.2
Fremantle -0.2
Collingwood -4.0
GWS -8.2
Sydney -14.1
Essendon -18.4
Hawthorn -20.3
Adelaide -31.2
Kangaroos -31.8
Lastly, if we consider the range of rankings that the three Systems have attached to each team, we find that Carlton, Fremantle, and West Coast (4 spots each) finish with the widest range of rankings, while all remaining 15 teams have rankings than differ by no more than 2 spots (and 13 teams by no more than a single spot).
Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, and Port Adelaide all finish ranked the same by all three Systems.
