2019 - Team Ratings After Round 2
/GWS’ reign at the top of both MoS Team Rating Systems was very short-lived, and they now find themselves sitting behind Collingwood on MoSSBODS, and behind Collingwood and Geelong on MoSHBODS.
The week’s big movers on MoSSBODS were Geelong and West Coast (both up three places), as well as Richmond, Hawthorn and Essendon (all down three places). MoSHBODS elevated West Coast by four places, and Collingwood and St Kilda by three places each, and also dropped Richmond, Melbourne and Essendon each by three places.
The Systems now differ in their rankings of all but the Brisbane Lions by no more than a single place. The Lions currently sit 8th on MoSSBODS and 11th on MoSHBODS.
Eleven teams have a positive Combined Rating on MoSSBODS, but only ten do on MoSHBODS.
Turning next to the component ratings of the two MoS Systems we find that Adelaide is ranked 1st offensively by MoSSBODS, while Geelong enjoys that ranking on MoSHBODS. Defensively both Systems now rank Collingwood 1st.
Looking across all 18 teams we find that:
on offence, only the Brisbane Lions (4th on MoSSBODS, 8th on MoSHBODS) and North Melbourne (15th on MoSSBODS, 12th on MoSHBODS) are ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems
on defence, only the Brisbane Lions (10th on MoSSBODS, 13th on MoSHBODS), St Kilda (11th on MoSSBODS, 14th on MoSHBODS), and Sydney (15th on MoSSBODS, 10th on MoSHBODS) are ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems
We can place the teams’ current offensive and defensive ratings in an historical context by comparing them with those of teams from the past at the same point in their respective seasons (ie after two rounds of the home-and-away season).
Teams shown as red points are teams that eventually finished premiers, and those shown in orange finished as runners up.
There are already a couple of teams - Gold Coast and Carlton - whose Combined Ratings are lower than any previous premier after two rounds of the season, and a few more whose Combined Ratings are superior to only a handful of premiers and runners up from history.
Next we turn to ChiPS and MARS who both now rank Geelong as the number 1 team, and have Richmond and Collingwood filling the next two places in one order or the other.
ChiPS elevated two (Geelong and West Coast) and dropped three (GWS, Hawthorn, and Melbourne) teams by more than two places. MARS elevated only one (West Coast) and dropped only two (GWS and Melbourne) by this much.
Only the Lions (9th on ChiPS and 12th on MARS) and the Crows (11th on ChiPS and 8th on MARS) are currently ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems.
Looking across the rankings of all four Systems and ordering the teams based on the current competition ladder (which still isn’t highly reliable), we find that:
Sydney has the widest range of rankings, from 8th on ChiPS to 15th on MoSSBODS
Brisbane Lions have the next-widest range of rankings, from 8th on MoSSBODS to 12th on MARS
No other team is ranked more than three places differently across the four Systems
