MatterOfStats 2025 : Team Dashboard for Round 5
/Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics table, which continues to show that the teams currently in the Top 8 mostly deserve to be there based on the metrics shown here (note that I order teams based firstly on the percentage of available competition points they have accrued and then on percentage).
The metrics currently most rank correlated with ladder position are:
MoS Win Production Function: +0.92
Own Scoring Shots per Game: +0.87
Percent of Quarters Won: +0.84
Own Points per Game: +0.81
Q3 Performances: +0.79
Opponent Points per Game: +0.77
Opponent Goals per Game: +0.75
Opponent Scoring Shots per Game: +0.75
Own Goals per Game: +0.75
Those least rank correlated with ladder position are:
Q2 Performances: +0.35
Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.42
Own Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.45
It seems right now that it’s more about volume than quality in the generation of scoring shots.
Next, here’s the latest Team Dashboard, which shows, among other things, that:
Speaking of scoring shots, Melbourne, Richmond and West Coast have, on average, generated fewer than five per quarter per game but have conceded between about six-and-a-half to eight per quarter.
GWS and Gold Coast are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters
Richmond and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters
Very few teams have similar percentages across all four quarters
Brisbane Lions (Q3), Carlton (Q1), Collingwood (Q3), Essendon (Q4), Geelong (Q4), GWS (Q1) all have particularly strong records in the quarters noted.
