2023 - Team Ratings After Round 25
After the Elimination and Qualifying Finals, the MoS twins now agree that Brisbane Lions should be ranked 1st, and GWS 2nd. Thereafter, MoSSBODS has it as Adelaide, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, and Sydney, while MoSHBODS has it as Melbourne, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, and Sydney.
Both of them remain resolutely unimpressed with Collingwood, who MoSSBODS ranks 9th and MoSHBODS 7th.
The correlation between MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS Combined Ratings now stands at +0.9944 and, roughly speaking, each team’s Combined MoSHBODS Rating is about 3.55 times its Combined MoSSBODS Rating.
On the Component Ratings, on offence we find MoSSBODS now with a Top 3 of Crows, Giants, and Lions, and MoSHBODS with a Top 3 of Lions, Crows, and Giants. On defence MoSSBODS now has a Top 3 of Dees, Dockers, and Lions, while MoSHBODS now has it as Dees, Dockers, and Saints.
MoSSBODS now has only 7 teams rated as above average on offence, while MoSHBODS has 9 teams so rated. As well, MoSSBODS still has 12 teams rated as above average on defence, while MoSHBODS has 11..
We can also review the trajectory that each team has followed to arrive at its current MoSSBODS Rating.
On MoSSBODS, 5 teams are now rated positively on offence and defence (down 3), 4 are rated negatively on both (no change), two are rated positively on offence but negatively on defence (no change), and 7 are rated negatively on offence but positively on defence (up 3).
The correlation between the teams’ MoSSBODS offensive and defensive Ratings now stands at +0.54, which is down again this week.
And, finally, to MARS, which re-ranked only four teams this week, switching the Lions into 1st ahead of the Dees, and the Cats into 4th ahead of Port Adelaide.
The Top 3 are now Lions, Dees, and Pies, with the remaining Finalists in 5th (Port Adelaide), 6th (Carlton), and 10th (GWS).
MARS has only slightly and sluggishly responded to GWS’ climb up the competition ladder, and still has them rated as a less than average team as late as Round 22.
MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS have, in contrast, responded much more and rapidly to the Giants’ recent results.
The Rating Gap between 1st and 3rd now stands at just under 4 Rating Points, which equates to about 3 actual points on a neutral venue.
There remain 11 teams rated better-than-average by MARS.
Looking finally at the range of rankings that the three Systems have attached to each team we find that just-referenced GWS (8 spots) has the widest range of rankings, and that there are seven teams for whom the rankings span a range of more than two spots.
There are also six teams that the Systems unanimously rank the same way: Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, and West Coast.
MARS has the most extreme rankings for 12 teams, MoSSBODS for four, and MoSHBODS for none at all.
MoSHBODS and MARS agree about the ranking of six teams, MoSSBODS and MARS also about six, and MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS about the ranking of 14 teams.
