We have new number ones on both Systems again this week, as a stationary Melbourne has watched Geelong fall below it and allow it to retake top spot on MoSSBODS, and Western Bulldogs have clambered over that same falling Geelong and a stationary Melbourne to claim top spot on MoSHBODS.

Overall, eight teams moved places on MoSSBODS this week, and 15 did the same on MoSHBODS, leaving the two Systems agreeing only about the ranking of the 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, and 15th through 18th teams. There are no teams, however, where they differ in their rankings by more than two places.

Eleven teams are now rated as above-average on MoSSBODS, and 12 teams on MoSHBODS, as it adds St Kilda to the list.

Altogether, there were three multiple-spot movers on MoSSBODS, including Port Adelaide and Essendon up 2 spots, and St Kilda down 2 spots. There were six multiple-spot mover on MoSHBODS, including Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, and Essendon all up 2 spots, Geelong down 2 spots, and St Kilda down 3 spots.

The correlation between MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS Combined Ratings remains very high, and now stands at +0.9924. The correlation on defence alone is +0.987 and on offence alone +0.990.

To provide some historical context to the teams’ current Ratings, the chart below shows the Ratings of selected teams from V/AFL history after 14 rounds of their respective seasons.

Geelong and Melbourne remain the only teams rated higher at this point in the season than 50% of the teams in history that subsequently made the Grand Final, while West Coast (now to a lesser extent) and North Melbourne remain amongst the teams with the lowest-ever offensive ratings.

On the Component Ratings, on offence, we find MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS now with Top 3s of Dogs, Lions, and Tigers, while on defence we still find both Systems with a Top 3 of Dockers, Dees and Cats.

On MoSSBODS, 8 teams are now rated positively on offence and defence (no change), 6 are rated negatively on both (no change), none is rated positively on offence but negatively on defence (no change), and 4 are rated negatively on offence but positively on defence (no change). The correlation between the teams’ MoSSBODS offensive and defensive Ratings now stands at +0.69.

And, finally, to MARS, which re-ranked only four teams this week, swapping Port Adelaide and St Kilda in 7th and 9th, and Essendon and Hawthorn in 14th and 15th.

MARS, once agin, has the same Top 5 teams as the MoS twins, but in a completely different order, agreeing with MoSHBODS on three (Melbourne, Geelong, and Sydney) but with MoSSBODS on only one (Sydney).

In terms of groupings, we now have, roughly:

• Brisbane Lions, Melbourne, and Geelong

• Western Bulldogs and Sydney

• Richmond, Port Adelaide, and Fremantle

• St Kilda and Carlton

• Collingwood and Gold Coast

• GWS

• Essendon and Hawthorn

• Adelaide

• West Coast

• North Melbourne

Twelve teams are now rated as better-than-average by MARS.

The Rating gap between first and last currently stands at about 79.5 Rating Points, which is the same as last week since both teams had the bye.

Looking across the rankings of all three Systems and ordering the teams based on the current competition ladder, we still find relatively large differences for a few teams, the largest being for Carlton (and, to a lesser extent, Fremantle), where the team’s ladder positions is well above its System Ranking, and for Western Bulldogs, where the team’s ladder position is well below its System Rankings.

MARS currently has the outright most-extreme ranking for eight of the teams, as does MoSSBODS, whilst MoSHBODS has it for only two teams.

MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS agree about the ranking of only eight teams, MoSHBODS and MARS about 10 teams, and MoSSBODS and MARS about only five teams.

If we consider the range of rankings that the three Systems have attached to each team, we find that Collingwood (4 spots) has the widest range of rankings, but that the range is just two spots or less for 12 teams.

The three Systems have the same ranking for Adelaide, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Sydney, and West Coast.
