Richmond held top spot on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS this weekend, doing about as well as both Systems expected in their game against Adelaide.

Not so for Collingwood on MoSSBODS, where a one scoring shot victory wasn't deemed large enough to justify the Pies' previous rating. They dropped 0.3 Scoring Shots on Combined Rating, slipping them into 4th and swapping them with a surging Melbourne who are now rated only 3.3 Scoring Shots below Richmond.

On MoSSBODS, then, the Top 4 are now Richmond, Melbourne, GWS, and Collingwood.

MoSHBODS was more forgiving of the Pies, although also slipping their rating a little, but not enough to move them from 2nd. MoSHBODS now has a Top 4 of Richmond, Collingwood, Melbourne, and GWS, and has the Pies trailing the Tigers by just over 15 points.

Collingwood and Melbourne aside, on MoSSBODS there were four other teams moving multiple places: Geelong (up 3 into 5th), Hawthorn (up 2 into 8th), Sydney (down 2 into 9th), and North Melbourne (down 2 into 11th).

MoSHBODS had Geelong climbing three spots into 5th as well, but also had as multi-spot movers Melbourne (up 3 into 3rd), Brisbane Lions (up 2 into 14th), Sydney (down 4 into 9th), West Coast (down 2 into 6th), and Western Bulldogs (down 2 into 15th).

That left the two Systems agreeing about the ranking of 11 teams, and differing in the ranking of the other 7 by no more than two places.

A large number of above-average teams remain quite similarly rated. On MoSSBODS, the gap between Melbourne in 2nd and Hawthorn in 8th is only 3.1 Scoring Shots, while on MoSHBODS, the gap between Collingwood in 2nd and Sydney in 9th is only 9.2 points.

Looking next at the component ratings, we see that:

• MoSSBODS now has a Top 3 on offence of Melbourne, Richmond, and then GWS, the top two changing places this week
• MoSHBODS' Top 3 on offence is now Richmond, Melbourne and then GWS, the latter having relegated Collingwood back into 4th
• MoSSBODS has a Top 3 on defence of Richmond, Port Adelaide and then Collingwood, after the Pies claimed 3rd this weekend in conceding only 17 scoring shots to Essendon. MoSHBODS agrees about Richmond and Port Adelaide, but has Geelong in 3rd now after they climbed three places this week in conceding only 14 scoring shots to Sydney.

Across all 18 teams we find that:

• Hawthorn is ranked 12th on Offence by MoSSBODS, and 9th by MoSHBODS
• Brisbane Lions is ranked 8th on Offence by MoSSBODS and 12th by MoSHBODS
• Brisbane Lions is ranked 15th on Defence by MoSSBODS and 17th by MoSHBODS

No other team is ranked more than two places differently on either component by the two Systems.

In the latest version of the animated GIF, which appears below, we can see Richmond still enjoying a healthy lead over the pursuing pack, but falling behind Melbourne on Offence for the first time this season.

Relative to history, Richmond's Combined Rating remained high enough to keep them in the top decile of teams at this point in the season that ultimately finished in the Top 2. No other team is above even the median Combined Rating at the end of Round 16 of previous Top 2 finishers.

As things stand now:

• five teams have a positive offensive and a positive defensive rating (down one from last week)
• none has a positive offensive and a negative defensive rating (also down one from last week)
• seven have a negative offensive and a positive defensive rating (up two from last week)
• six have a negative offensive and a negative defensive rating (unchanged from last week)

In total, only 5 teams now have a positive offensive rating while 12 have a positive defensive rating.

On ChiPS this week, eight teams moved places, though only Hawthorn and Melbourne (both up 2), and Port Adelaide and West Coast (both down 2) moved by more than a single spot. Eight teams also moved on MARS, five by more than a single spot, comprising Brisbane Lions (up 3), Hawthorn and Melbourne (up 2), and Adelaide and Fremantle (both down 2).

ChiPS and MARS Ratings, like the MoS twins', still suggest that the competition has a large number of above-average teams with relatively similar underlying abilities. On ChiPS, the rating difference between Sydney in 2nd and GWS in 9th is just over 9 Rating Points, while on MARS, that between Geelong in 3rd and Adelaide in 10th is less than 14 Rating Points.  

The two Systems differ now by more than two places in their rankings only of:

• Collingwood, ranked 3rd on ChiPS and 7th on MARS
• Hawthorn, ranked 5th on ChiPS and 8th on MARS
• Port Adelaide, ranked 7th on ChiPS and 4th on MARS

Looking across the team rankings of all four Systems and comparing them with the current competition ladder, we find that:

• West Coast and Fremantle sit significantly higher on the competition ladder than their ranking on most of the Rating Systems
• Geelong, GWS and the Brisbane Lions sit significantly lower on the competition ladder than their ranking on most of the Rating Systems
• Sydney (2nd to 9th) is ranked seven places differently across the Rating Systems.
• GWS (3rd to 9th) is ranked six places differently across the Rating Systems.
• Collingwood (2nd to 7th) is ranked five places differently across the Rating Systems.
• Melbourne (2nd to 6th) is ranked four places differently across the Rating Systems.
• No other team is ranked more than three places differently across the Rating Systems.
