2017 - Team Ratings After Round 27 (Grand Final Week)
MoSSBODS swapped Richmond and Adelaide this week, catapulting the Premiers into top spot and relegating the Minor Premiers to 3rd. MoSHBODS, conversely, had the Tigers closing the gap to the Swans but still finishing 3rd, and the Crows hanging on for 1st by about 3 points.
Sydney, then, finishes in 2nd on both Systems, just 0.1 Scoring Shots behind Richmond on MoSSBODS, and 2.9 Points behind Adelaide on MoSHBODS.
On Offensive Ratings, Richmond slipped into the Top 3 on MoSSBODS, but remained 4th on MoSHBODS. Adelaide finished 1st on both Systems.
Defensively, Richmond snatched 1st on MoSHBODS, but couldn't quite haul in Sydney on MoSSBODS, and so finished 2nd.
The final Top 3s are, therefore:
Offence
- MoSSBODS: Adelaide, Essendon, Richmond
- MoSHBODS: Adelaide, Sydney, Essendon
Defence
- MoSSBODS: Sydney, Richmond, GWS
- MoSHBODS: Richmond, Sydney, Port Adelaide
The final round-by-round MoSSBODS Rating journey animation appears below and shows Richmond narrowly grabbing 1st place from Adelaide and Sydney at the end of the Grand Final.
This week, we'll also take a look at the end-of-season MoSHBODS Ratings of the 18 teams for the period 2010 to 2017, which shows, among other things, the consistency of Geelong, Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Sydney.
(NB: This and all charts can be clicked to access a larger version.)
One of the remarkable aspects of this chart is how little the Ratings of most teams changed between the end of 2016 and 2017, the notable exceptions being Essendon and Richmond.
Lastly, we'll review the final Ratings of all of the Premiers and Runners Up across history, grouped by era to improve the legibility.
We see that neither the Richmond or Adelaide 2017 teams stand out as especially dominant teams compared to other Grand Finalists from the modern eras.
ChiPS AND MARS
Neither ChiPS nor MARS re-ranked any team this week, though they both did significantly reward Richmond and penalise Adelaide.
Both finish then with the same Top 3 teams though in reverse order, ChiPS opting for Richmond, Sydney and then Adelaide, and MARS Adelaide, Sydney and then Richmond.
Looking across the four Systems we see that Adelaide, Richmond and Sydney finish in the Top 3 for all of them.
(Note that the coloured annotations attached to each of the rankings in the table reflect the System's Rating relative to the team's ladder finish in the home-and-away season.)
The largest disparities in team rankings remain as:
- Essendon (ranked 8th on MoSHBODS and 13th on MARS)
- West Coast (ranked 7th on MARS and 12th on MoSSBODS)
- Melbourne (ranked 8th on MARS, and 13th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS)
- Western Bulldogs (ranked 7th on MoSSBODS and 12th on ChiPS)
- St Kilda (ranked 7th on MoSHBODS, and 13th on ChiPS)
No other team is ranked more than four places differently across the Systems.
