Percentage of Quarters Won (+0.89)
The MoS Win Production Function (+0.88)
Opponent Scoring: Points (+0.87)
Opponent Scoring: Goals (+0.84)
Scoring Shots Conceded (+0.83)
Scoring Shots Recorded (+0.74)
Own Scoring: Points (+0.72)
Own Scoring: Goals (+0.72)
The weakest rank correlations with ladder position are associated with:
Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.12)
Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.45)
Own Scoring Shot Conversion and. to a lesser extent, Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion remain largely irrelevant to success in the competition, especially if you look only at the Top 8 teams on the ladder.

Carlton, Geelong, Melbourne, and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters taken separately.
Sydney have outscored their opponents in Q1s , Q2s, and Q3s, but still lie 10th on the ladder.
Gold Coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters taken separately
Collingwood have registered only a 90 percentage in Q3s. They’ve also only converted at 49% in that quarter, but at 62% in Q2 and Q4.
St Kilda have registered substantially fewer scoring shots than their opponents and have registered only a 78 percentage in Q2s. Also, despite sitting 7th on the ladder, they’ve lost more quarters than they’ve won.
GWS have registered fewer scoring shots than their opponents in both Q1s and Q2s, and have percentages of just 88 and 84 in those two quarters
Collingwood’s opponents have converted at only 40% and GWS’ at 40% in Q4s this season
By way of contrast, Brisbane Lions’ opponents have coverted at 64% and Port Adelaide’s at 60% in Q3s
Geelong have scored 30% of their points in Q1s, and Fremantle only 19%. Brisbane Lions habe conceded only 19% of their points in Q2’s and Carlton just 20% in same quarter, whereas Collingwood have conceded 31% of their points in Q3s
