MatterOfStats 2024 : Team Dashboard for Round 12
The latest Rankings on Dashboard Metrics graphic appears below, and reveals that team rankings on the following metrics are most highly correlated with ladder position (which, once again is determined firstly by percentage of possible competition points accumulated, and then by percentage):
Percent of Quarters Won (+0.85)
Own Points per Game (+0.81)
Q3 Performances (+0.81)
Own Goals per Game (+0.81)
Own Scoring Shots per Game (+0.74)
Least highly correlated are:
Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.17)
Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.27)
Opponent Points per Game (+0.34)
Opponent Goals per Game (+0.35)
Opponent Scoring Shots per Game (+0.38)
Q2 Performances (+0.39)
Q4 Performances (+0.48)
Long-time readers of this Team Dashboard blog will understand just how unusual some of those correlations are, a fact that can possibly be partly explained by the unprecedented similarity in the abilities of many of the teams and the resultant somewhat more random-like nature of the team ladder ordering.
A review of this table and the detailed Team Dashboard below provides more insight:
Essendon still has only the 13th-highest percentage and are 11th on Own and Opponent Scoring Shots per Game
Port Adelaide are 16th on Own Scoring Shot Conversion and 14th on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion
Western Bulldogs are 3rd on Own Scoring Shot generation and 3rd on Opponent Scoring Shot generation
Brisbane Lions are 5th on Own Scoring Shot generation and 2nd on Opponent Scoring Shot generation
The larger Team Dashboard also reveals that:
Adelaide’s opponents have converted at only 46%, and Sydney’s at 44%
Geelong, Essendon, and Carlton have won only 42% of Q2s
Essendon have generated fewer scoring shots than their opponents have in Q1s and Q2s, and have a sub-100 percentage for Q2s.
Hawthorn have outscored their opponents in Q2s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter
Richmond, North Melbourne, and West Coast have been outscored by their opponents in every quarter
The only teams to have outscored their opponents in every quarter are Port Adelaide, Sydney and Western Bulldogs
Brisbane Lions have scored 57% of their points in 1st halfs and conceded 58% in 2nd halfs. They’ve converted at only 36% in Q3s
Melbourne have scored 60% of their points in 2nd halfs
Sydney’s opponents have converted at only 33% in Q2s
Carlton’s opponents have converted at 65% in Q1s
